Artist Bio
Ruby Coley comes from a diverse background, blending Rotuman, Dutch, and Kiwi heritage. Growing up in Grey Lynn, Auckland, music was always a big part of her life, thanks to her parents' involvement in the music and movie industry. With her mum being a 90s chart-topping pop/soul singer, it's no surprise that Ruby developed a deep love for music, especially playing the piano and singing. Inspired by artists like Gracie Abrams, Holly Humberstone, Sampha, Bon Iver, Loyle Carner, Lana Del Ray, and Olivia Dean, Ruby's musical tastes are wide-ranging.
During her high school years, Ruby discovered her passion for songwriting, creating heartfelt melodies and lyrics in the comfort of her own home. In 2019, she took a big step forward, recording demo tracks at Roundhead Studios. This opened up opportunities for Ruby to collaborate with different producers, refining her sound along the way. Her journey eventually led her to participate in the NZ on Air New Artist development project, where she teamed up with Josh Naley, further shaping her artistic path.
Eddie EP
Ruby Coley releases her debut EP - EDDIE
EDDIE showcases a beginning of discovery in songwriting and Bedroom Pop storytelling.
Themes from experiences growing up, a young adult moving away from home for the first time. Discovering life in new cities with your mates, first relationships, self-doubts, and growing pains.
The EP project was helmed by Josh Naley (Wells*), who secured NZ On Air New Music Development funding with Ruby. Josh produced three of the tracks on the EP and co-produced on Take Me Back with Harry Charles, who also produced Devil on My Shoulder.
The EP features collaborations with songwriters Phoebe Jasper (Navvy) and Brayden Jeffrey.
EDDIE features Ruby’s debut single, “Devil on My Shoulder”, and follow-up single “, Take Me Back”, released earlier in 2024. Both singles have been well received, making The Official New Zealand Music Charts Hot 20 NZ Singles Chart.
Playlisting on radio has also been strong, with both songs gaining significant adds across the country, featuring on the Radioscope Top 100, Pop, NZ and Most Added Radio charts.
Two new songs will be added with the EDDIE release.
“Runaway”, written in collaboration with Josh and Phoebe Jasper (Navvy), is a bop, an uptempo pop tune about escaping, finding some freedom from daily life and making it up as you go along.
“Give It Back to Me” is a pop ballad baring the twists and turns of figuring out young love and loss, penned with Josh and Brayden Jeffrey.
EDDIE was mixed by Lee Smith at Greenmount Studios, Leeds, England (credits include Holly Humberstone, Easy Life with Benée, Griff, Good Neighbours, and others).
Mastered by John Greenham at Clearlight Mastering, Los Angeles, USA, a Grammy Award winner with Billie Eilish (other credits include Finneas, Gracie Abrams, Sigrid, and Sam Smith).
EP cover art shot by Holly Sarah Burgess.
The title EDDIE pays homage to the inspiration of storytelling Ruby and her late grandmother shared over the love of the book *The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane* written by Kate DiCamillo.
Ruby’s connection with the book, its themes, and artwork has all contributed to her writing and creative journey - this also led to her connecting with Danish artist Anna Degnbol to create artwork and animations for the first two singles covers and the wallpaper backdrop for the cover shoot.
